The big question I've been asked since I was little: Are there penguins in the streets of Ushuaia? Where can I see penguins in Ushuaia? Everyone associates the end of the world, and the gateway to Antarctica, with these wonderful creatures of nature. The truth is, to see penguins, you need to take a half-day excursion, either by boat or by land. To get to Isla Martillo, the famous island known as \"the penguin colony,\" you need to travel for a couple of hours. And while it's famous in the summer, when more than 11,000 penguins of two species come to nest from October to March, the land excursion is often offered during some winter months as well. Most of these excursions offer penguin viewing without landing on the island. They stay for 15 to 20 minutes along the coast, from a semi-rigid boat to a catamaran, combining the activity with other options. Only one company is permitted to take groups of no more than 20 people on a one-hour hike for a closer encounter with these wonderful creatures. And if you're lucky, you might even spot another penguin species that happens to be visiting on their way to Antarctica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
